Detoxification Diet: What’s it for?

detoxification dietDetoxification is a process by which the body rids itself of harmful toxins through a number of cleansing methods. These may involve cleansing the important organs for detoxification, such as the liver, kidneys, skin, intestines, lungs, and the lymphatic system. The primary aim of detoxification is to allow the body to eliminate accumulated wastes. Once this this done, the body can return to its normal and efficient functioning.

Detoxification allows restoration of the normal acid-alkaline balance of the body, as well as helps rebuild the natural elimination processes. A well planned out detoxification diet will help enhance circulation, provide nutrients, and will cleanse the organs.

The anti-reflux detoxification diet aims to eliminate potential sources of acid-reflux triggers. It will also help reduce the associated inflammation in the esophagus due to constant heartburn. Furthermore, when the body is fully cleansed, the lower esophageal sphincter, which in its relaxation causes acid reflux, can function effectively and strengthen up. This will decrease the incidence of further acid reflux.

In addition to diet changes, the detoxification process involves taking nutritional supplements, drinking a lot of water, exercising, brushing the skin, doing breathing exercises, taking sauna, and Epsom salt baths.

Detoxification using the acid reflux diet

Acid reflux is the leakage of stomach acid back into the esophagus. Contrary to popular belief, antacids and other medications for the relief of acid reflux do not exactly cure the underlying condition. In fact, these medications only increase acid production and upset the pH levels in the body, leading to further complications. It can produce more harmful acids.

Other factors that puts you at risk for GERD include overeating and its resulting obesity, constipation from a low-residue diet, usually from too many fast-foods, dairy foods (which are all acid-forming), side effects of prescription drugs, and hiatal hernia. Having a hiatal hernia can also be caused by today’s standard diet.

The GERD Detoxification Diet

Each diet program has its own guidelines or principles to follow. In helping prevent acid-reflux, here are the rules:

  • Make sure you drink a lot of water throughout the day. Water is an important part of detoxification as it is a medium needed by the body to carry the toxins and waste products out of the system.
  • Take 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil on an empty stomach each morning.
  • Drink a lot of detoxification tea throughout the day.
  • You should include the following fruits and vegetables to your detox diet: sprouts, blueberries, onions, carrots, watermelons, apples, spinach, grapes, nuts and seeds, raw Brazil nuts, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, pumpkin seeds, avocados, non gluten grains such as quinoa, millet, buckwheat, or amaranth, and a variety of vegetable soups.
  • During your detoxification diet, you should also refrain from all kinds of meat, fish, dairy products, all refined carbohydrates, processed foods, white sugar, wheat, caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, tobacco, high-fat, and fried cooked meals.
  • Follow an alkalizing, purifying plant-based diet.
  • For ongoing relief, drink juices for stomach acid balance at least once daily.
  • Eat plenty of cultured foods like yogurt, kefir and miso soup, fresh and lightly steamed vegetables, fruits, and enzyme-rich foods like papaya and pineapple.
  • Eliminate fried and spicy foods as they slow the rate at which your stomach empties, allowing food to travel back to the esophagus.
  • Omit red meats, fatty dairy foods, dried fruits, sodas, and caffeine.
  • Foods that aggravate a hiatal hernia such as coffee, chocolate, red meats, hard alcohol drinks, and sodas.
  • Some good digestive teas are peppermint, spearmint, ginger, dill, caraway, chamomile, and wild yam tea.
  • You can also take additional supplements and probiotics to aid digestion.
  • Taking a glass of water with lemon can help against symptoms of heartburn from an acid reflux. You can to this upon rising first thing in the morning and at anytime of the day afterwards. This also serves as a great alkalinizing drink for your body that equally refreshing as well.
  • To soothe the burn, you may drink slippery elm tea or lozenges, marshmallow tea, and aloe vera juice.

In order for the acid reflux detoxification to occur, bodywork and lifestyle changes can do wonders for digestion as well. Always remember that a combined approach to detoxification will ensure that you have a holistic approach to total body cleansing.
